Is Eliza Human?
The problem with Eliza, like any other computer program, is she is only as smart as the human behind the screen programming her. It would take years and years of programming for anyone to get remotely close to having enough responses Eliza could give that would make her appear to be human. While playing 'Hour of Code: Is Eliza human?' I got a chance to see what it would basically be like to try to program something like Eliza. I found it to be very difficult as there were so many technical details that only resulted in one or two viable responses. You're not just writing her responses to the person using her, you're writing a possible conversation out as well. Maybe a better way to program computers would be to record normal human to human conversation and see if they can detect any patterns. That makes the conversation more human, and it's nearly impossible to do that on a programmer that is designed to get from one point to the other. Human conversation doesn't always have meaning, or have a straight answer at the end of the tunnel, sometimes it's pointless, and there has to be good flow through topics or conversation, more than just question and answer, question and answer. Eliza seems more like a difficult game, and a black hole taking away time that could be be put to better use, and I don't believe she could ever be more than that.
